Networked Learning Project
For my “Networked Learning Project,” I want to try hand lettering. I have always admired my fellow educators who have a talent for creating beautiful welcome signs, anchor charts, table signs and even essential agreements. I have wanted to learn how they achieve such beautiful results. However, I have never had the time to dedicate to learning this skill. When we were given the assignment to “learn something new,” it sounded like the perfect opportunity to finally try my hand at lettering.
“Hand Lettering” is a current art trend that combines modern calligraphy and print (example can be seen to the right). For this assignment, I will attempt to learn the alphabet in modern calligraphy (upper and lowercase letters) and incorporate my existing knowledge of print letters. Part of this trend, is that it does not require specialized brushes or tools. Therefore, I will use household markers or pens only. In the researching that I have done thus far, there are several tutorials, worksheets, and blogs dedicated to refining the art of hand lettering. For example, Rebecca Spooner has created a blog dedicated to hand lettering that includes several resources and examples for beginners (https://homeschoolon.com/hand-lettering-for-beginners/). There is even a popular Instagram hashtag, #handlettering, that I am planning on using for inspiration. To acquire this skill, I plan to: 1. Watch YouTube tutorials Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s72_tZj6zg (embedded to the right) 2. Compare the tutorials with blog posts Example: http://creativlei.com/2015/learning-basic-letter-forms-loveyourlettering/ 3. Practice using recommended hand writing sheets Example: http://amylattacreations.com//2017/01/free-brush-lettering-practice-sheets-uppercase-alphabet.html (embedded to the right) 4. Apply my new knowledge of letters to the creation of words. Example: https://printablecrush.com/3-free-printable-modern-calligraphy-practice-sheets/ For my final product, I would like to create two 5x7 signs with inspirational quotes to hang in my classroom. Although I have many signs throughout my room, they are professionally done and I think it detracts from “maker” idea. In class, we have talked a lot about how important it is for kids to have hands on activities where they are creating something and taking ownership of that creation. I would like to be an example for my students and “make” something beautiful. Possible Inspirational Quotes: 1. Embrace the Adventure 2. You miss out on 100% of the chances you don’t take 3. Your attitude determines direction 4. The important thing to do is never stop questioning Planned Resources Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s72_tZj6zg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENj1xxj9STs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te_LY08wYII Blogs: https://homeschoolon.com/hand-lettering-for-beginners/ http://creativlei.com/love-your-lettering/ https://creativemarket.com/blog/hand-lettering-for-beginners?utm_source=ownedpinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=keywordproject Handwriting Sheets: https://printablecrush.com/3-free-printable-modern-calligraphy-practice-sheets/ http://amylattacreations.com//2017/01/free-brush-lettering-practice-sheets-uppercase-alphabet.html |
